He went to grade school in Rachel in a one room school building owned by the Joann Coal Mine Company, then went to Mannington Grade School and High School, where he graduated in 1964. After graduating, Ron was drafted during the Vietnam War but received a letter from the Draft Board saying they had filled draftees for that month. Afterwards, he got a job as an electrician helper after taking class for general house wiring at Fairmont State College, and later worked at Westinghouse Electric Corporation. In 1968, Ron met David Smith, a photographer at WVU, who asked if Ron would help him develop film in his evening class at WVU. After developing a roll of his own film and seeing the results, he was hooked. And the rest is history. Ron applied for an opening at the then Morgantown Post and the Dominion News, and later the Morning Reporter and was hired in May of 1969 using 4&5 Speed Graphic camera before 35 mm. While working there, he has covered six presidents, a visit to the White House during Reagan Administration, the Seventies including Woodstock in 1969, the Olympic Trials in 1984 and Mary Lou Retton. He become Chief Photographer at the Dominion Post in 1984. Ron was president of Professional Photographers of West Virginia; a member of Triangle Photographers Association while at the Dominion Post; received the Martin Luther King Jr achievement award; and part of the The West Virginia Press Association, winning several awards including Photo of the Year. In 2007, Ron authored and published a book on the 100th Anniversary of the Monongah Coal Mine Disaster. He is also an Antique Dealer and collector of antiques and vintage cars for the past 50 years. Ron has been a photographer for the Dominion Post for 55 years and Ogden newspapers for over a year and still enjoys shooting everyday.
