History of the MAA:
The Morgantown Art Association (MAA) began as an outgrowth of Art Classes for Seniors offered by Superintendent of Art in Monongalia County, Wilbur Bauer. He arranged for these evening classes to be held in one of the public schools weekly. When this program was no longer funded, Mr. Bauer suggested that these enthusiastic students organize, find a location to continue these art classes and employ their own instructors. This was done in 1958 and local businesses and churches began to display art work produced by the newly formed Morgantown Art Association.
Mrs. H.G. Wheat was elected the first association president. With the knowledge gained from having served in the field of education at the state level in West Virginia, Mrs. Wheat acted as an advisor to the association for many years. Early after its formation, the Art Association began presenting its annual (cash award winning) “Exhibit 60” which featured work from artists living within a sixty-mile radius of Morgantown. This exhibit had entries from West Virginia’s north central area and Uniontown, Pa. These entries averaged between 75 to 135 pieces of work.
It was constantly an effort to fund the Association’s various activities. Consequently, much time and effort was put into art sales, auctions, instructional classes, and fund-raising activities.
The Association was housed for ten years in the Garlow Building on High Street. From here it moved to a house located on Kirk Street and later the M.A.A. became an “in house member” of the newly established Morgantown Art Center, located in the former main Morgantown Post Office.
The Association’s desire was always to have its own gallery where members, non-professional artists, could display their work and hold classes and meetings. This was realized in 2004 when these needs were met with their move to its current location (The Gallery) in the Mountaineer Mall.
The M.A.A. holds a membership of 135 to 174 members. We have contributed to our community in various ways including:
· In our well-equipped Gallery classroom, we offer weekly classes, numerous day-long workshops, and three to four annual workshops taught by outstanding nationally acclaimed artists. This instruction is for the enrichment and growth of our members, and others interested in further art instruction. The Morgantown Art Association has a continual and ever-changing display of artwork available for viewing and for purchase by the public on the walls of our Gallery.
· In the past, we presented an Outstanding High School Art Student Award in three of the county’s high schools. We also produced a 10’ by 30’ mural displayed in the Mountaineer Mall depicting historical and well-known sites in Monongalia County.
For over half a century, the Morgantown Art Association has given creative individuals a place to share their love of art as well as their artwork. With the support and participation of its members, the Morgantown Art Association will continue to thrive for years to come.
