WORKSHOPS & CLASSES
"To draw you must close your eyes and sing." - Pablo Picasso
REGISTRATION AND CANCELLATION POLICY
If you want to attend any of MAA’s multi-day workshops, you need to register in advance. Many of these workshops have a limited number of spaces available. Here is how you can secure your space and what happens if you change your mind.
- To register for a multi-day workshop, you need to pay a $100 deposit, which includes a $25 non-refundable fee. This deposit is applied toward tuition and ensures seating once full payment is made.
- Full payment for the workshop must be made before the published cut-off date for registration, typically one month before the workshop. The actual cut-off date will be announced in the workshop announcement.
- If you decide to cancel your registration before the cut-off date, we will refund all the tuition fees you paid, except for a $25 cancellation fee. If you cancel after the cut-off date, we will not provide any refunds. If the Instructor or MAA cancels the class, we will provide a full refund.
- If the workshop is full when you try to register, you can pay a $100 deposit to join the waitlist. We will refund your deposit in full if we cannot admit you to the workshop.
- For ease of bookkeeping and to ensure an accurate registration count, we ask that all workshop fees be paid by check made out to MAA and mailed to:
- Byron Witt, Chairperson, MAA Education Committee
26 Hunter Zane Road
Fairmont, WV 26554 - For workshops that are scheduled after Steve Riggs (April 2024), please send fees to the following: MAA, Attn: Tia Hunt 5000 Greenbag Road, Morgantown, WV 26501
- This policy only applies to multi-day workshops. Short workshops are more flexible regarding registration and tuition payment. Specific registration details are included in each workshop’s announcement.

** JANET ROGERS' SUPPLY LIST
Janet Rogers, AWS, Instructor – “Expressive, Loose Watercolors – Flowers to Figures”
Dear Students: I look forward to our workshop. Below is a SUGGESTED list of supplies. PLEASE DO NOT FEEL YOU HAVE TO HAVE EVERYTHING!! Hopefully you already have supplies that are the same or comparable. Please call me for any questions (cell: 386-451-8441) or E-Mail: janet@watercolorsbyrogers.com. Website: www.watercolorsbyrogers.com
WATERCOLOR PAPERS: I suggest 140lb Coldpressed such as Arches Bright White (or natural) (I use the “wrong side” – opposite of watermark) or 140lb Rough Arches Bright White or Natural. You can also use Fabriano cold pressed, or Kilimanjaro found at Cheap Joes Art Stuff (that does not matter which side. It will be helpful to have extra watercolor paper (could be backs of old paintings, etc.) for painting exercises. Of course, you will also need a board – or a foam core for support– I use a corrugated plastic cardboard – size 17”x22”(material is what they use for political signs) to support your painting. If you paint larger you may want a Gatorboard. We do many paintings, so please bring enough watercolor paper (approx. 3 to 5 paintings per day – can be ½ sheets or ¼ sheets). – or like I said – if you want larger - - (I USUALLY USE ½ sheets for demos)
OTHER PAPERS: A pad of cheap drawing paper will be needed in any portrait or figure workshop. I like smooth drawing paper – not Newsprint (the pencil moves faster on smoother paper) (I usually bring extra)
PENCILS: I suggest a #2B pencil for drawing on the watercolor paper, but really love the ebony pencils (or 6B) for drawing exercises. A kneaded eraser and pencil sharpener will be handy.
PALETTE: I use various palettes, such as “Cheap Joe’s Piggy Back”, etc. – I also use a “Jasper Tray” (plastic type butcher tray) to make more “pigment areas”. Palettes should have larger area for mixing. Of course you can just bring flat white trays to make a palette – like the Jasper Tray, or plates or trays you may find in a dollar store) You just want to be sure you have plenty of areas to make mixing areas.
OTHER STUFF: . Hair dryer(if you need), container for water, paper towels (I love Bounty). We will work from photos for the Portrait & Figure workshops – I will have photos sent to you about a week or two ahead that I will demonstrate at the workshop. (PROBABLY A FEMALE ADULT AND A CHILD) , - (I also will bring sets – photos and drawings. BUT YOU CAN USE YOUR OWN IF YOU LIKE (your family or preference). -ones with good lights and darks (shadow shapes). Ideally shadow shapes should should be more than ½ of face. You will probably want to bring a “pre-drawn” drawing on wc paper for your portrait ––you can also do 2 ( would be better) it just may be “reassuring” if you are new to portraits. Also you may want to bring tracing paper to trace your own drawing again to have for practicing flesh tones – although sometimes there is a window or light box for tracing. REMEMBER: use the opposite side of 140 CP Arches to draw your portrait (YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PUT IN ALL SHADOW SHAPES!!) I WILL GO OVER THIS AT THE WORKSHOP !!!
BRUSHES: I like the following: ½” and ¾” “Flat” brush such as King Art 9550 Wash, a "Max Round" KingArt 9020 size 10, 12 or 14 (for details); and – a Round King Art #14. Also recommend AMERICAN JOURNEY INTERLOCKED SYNTHETIC BRUSHES (green handles) – ROUNDS – AJR12, or AJR14 and AJR-28. All these brushes can be found at Cheap Joes Art Stuff. I use these brushes, but bring what you have. And I always bring brushes you can borrow.
WATERCOLOR PAINTS: - I usually try to bring some extra pigments with me in case you cannot find some (not for sale, but for you to use at the workshop.)
LIMITED LIST OF PIGMENTS
(you can get by on these )
These colors are all mostly transparent and do well in mixing other colors.
This list is to help students who do not have access to all the colors I use -
PLEASE NOTE: there are six colors in bold…..these are the strongest recommended!! (two limited triads)
TRIAD #1 – Light to Mid Values
Aureolin (a transparent cool yellow) (Winsor-Newton) (my favorite is Winsor-Newton) (or a any TRANSPARENT Cool Yellow you have)
Permanent Rose (a cool pink – I use a lot – Am. Journey, or W/N)
Cobalt Blue (American Journey, or W/N or Holbein)
AND
TRIAD #2 – Mid to Dark Values
Quinacridone Gold (a very intense transparent bright yellow gold) Daniel Smith or Holbein) (these brands are the only ones to use)
Permanent Alizarin Crimson (a deep cool pink/red) – Holbein or W/N or D.Smith
Ultramarine Blue (AJ, W/N or Holbein) - probably all same
OTHER HELPFUL COLORS: (you do not HAVE TO HAVE – but nice)
Cerulean Blue (W/N) or Sky Blue (American Journey)
Prussian Blue (American Journey or other)
Janet’s Violet Rose (American Journey)* (a substitute is “Cobalt Violet Light Hue” by Sennelier or Perm. magenta)
