THREE MAJOR ART EXHIBITS
Three major art exhibits are held each year at the Gallery. Awards are given to the winning entries which are selected by an independent impartial judge. The major exhibits are:
- Photography Show. Held each March. Entries can include traditional, digital, or innovative photos. The entry fee is $2 per item
- Exhibit 60. Held in April and May. This juried and judged exhibit is the highlight of our annual calendar, showcasing the best works of art from our talented members and other artists. Up to $1,000 in awards are given. The entry fee is $10 per piece. MAA has held this prestigious event every year since 1958, except for 2021 due to the COVID pandemic.
- All-Member Show. Held in October. The entry fee is $10 for two items.
SEVEN MONTHLY EXHIBITS
Besides the three major art shows, MAA also holds monthly art exhibits at the Gallery. These exhibits are non-judged. The entry fee is $2 per item. The exhibits often have a theme that is meant to inspire and challenge our members. However, compliance with the theme is not mandatory. Themes are announced one month in advance in the MAA Splash. STANDARDS FOR EXHIBITING ART
To be accepted for an exhibit, artwork must follow the show’s prospectus, if applicable, as well as these guidelines.
To be accepted for an exhibit, artwork must follow the show’s prospectus, if applicable, as well as these guidelines.
- All art pieces must be labeled with the title of the work, medium, artist’s name, and price (if the artwork is for sale).
- Acceptable media forms include painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, mixed media, photography, pottery/clay, sculpture, textiles, blown glass, wood turning, and jewelry (except for the Photography Show).
- Artwork must be suitable for display in a family-friendly venue. The Exhibit Committee will NOT accept artwork that is deemed vulgar, sexually provocative, graphically violent, or politically divisive.
- Artwork must be original. Copies of other artists’ work or published material are not acceptable. Photos may be used as source material for a painting if (a) you took the photo, (b) the photo is in the public domain (i.e., non-copyrighted), or (c) you have explicit permission from the photographer to use the photo. Artwork that you completed at a workshop is acceptable as long as you completed all the work yourself. MAA is not responsible for any legal action levied against a member for copyright violations.
- Artwork must be clean and dry.
- Wall-mounted artwork must have a wire hanger -- saw tooth hangers are not permitted!
- Drawings, watercolors, and photographs must be under glass or Plexiglas, or suitably mounted.
- Mats should be clean, well-cut, and made from appropriate matting materials.
- Two-dimensional artwork must be framed or gallery-wrapped. Frames must have no chips. Gallery-wrapped canvas must have painted sides with no nails or staples showing.
- Three-dimensional artwork, such as sculpture, ceramics, and textiles, must be prepared for exhibit.
- MAA may decline to display any artwork that does not meet its standards. These standards cover the professionalism, quality, size, and suitability of the work as well as adherence to the requirements of the show’s prospectus. If artwork is declined, the member will receive a rationale for the decision. The Exhibit Committee also acknowledges that most of MAA’s members are amateur artists. Upon request, the Committee may offer assistance or suggestions on creating artwork suitable for display.
